“Dashun is located at the junction of Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, within the jurisdiction of Xitang—millennium town, featuring flat terrain, densely-covered river network and ancient rhyme. It is a southern Chinese riverside town. In ancient times, it was the boundary of Wu and Yue, and was known as “the end of Wu and the corner of Yue”. It is found in the archaeological excavation of Liangzhu Culture Relic that Dashun, Wuxian Chenghu and Wujiang Meiyan all belong to the late Liangzhu culture. It is proved that Dashun was permeated by Liangzhu culture in the Neolithic Age 4200-5300 years ago. Through thousands of years of cultural accumulation and historic development, there are a large number of scholars and developed traditional industry. Xitang is a world-famous millennium town, and owns developed traditional handicraft industry, laying a humanistic foundation for Dashun as China’s “Hometown of Button”.

In classical literature, “Jie (knot)” symbolizes the love of men and women. The rich emotions of human are like the changeful “Jie (knot)”. Therefore, “Sheng Jie (knot)” reflected the good wish of pursuing the true, the good and the beautiful and religious belief in ancient times. The button has developed from S-shaped knot at the waist, the “ribbon” in the Zhou dynasty, “the brocade belt was used to tie a knot at the waist, symbolizing the love of men and women” in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, “silk clothes with ribbon knots” in the flourishing Tang Dynasty, and “the ribbon tied at the waist” to the “button” used by the cheongsam in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, reflecting its position in the Chinese traditional garment. Through thousands of years of evolution, the button replaces “Sheng Jie (knot)” in modern times. Today the ancient “knot” is collectively known as the “Chinese knot” and has a wider range of decorative functions. The “knot” still exerts a far-reaching influence on the modern dress culture.
